Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation and partners fund social purpose organizations with $236,000 to support recovery efforts and prepare for investment

KITCHENER, ON — Today, Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF) and partners have awarded $236,000 in funding to 9 social purpose organizations throughout Waterloo Region, Guelph, Stratford, Perth South and Centre Wellington, as part of the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program (IRP). These organizations are working to create meaningful jobs, strengthen the charitable and non-profit sector, and address social challenges, including the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With the assistance of the IRP funding, they will be better prepared to receive investment, including through the Government of Canada’s Social Finance Fund.

Local chef builds culinary social enterprise, supporting youth and their families through therapeutic cooking

Pam Fanjoy started her career as a clinical social worker and worked throughout the health care sector for 25 years. In 2010, Pam decided to start taking culinary lessons as a personal outlet for some fun and eventually graduated from George Brown College with a Culinary Management degree in 2013. While still practicing social work, she had started cooking prepared healthy meals for professionals, which was so well received that she opened a storefront in Erin in 2014.

Pam later created Fan/Joy, where she refined her line of Gourmet to Go frozen meals and continued exploring the synergies between her two greatest passions: helping youth and families improve their mental health and food.  The connection seemed natural to her and she began whisking up recipes with therapeutic techniques that helped people to learn new coping skills, better communication and how to collaborate with others through cooking classes for youth, families, and individuals.

Chef Combines Cooking and Social Work in New Online Course

They are two rather diverse careers, however Pam Fanjoy, owner and executive chef at Fan/Joy Restaurant and Bar in Hillsburgh, combines her culinary expertise with her career as a clinical social worker to foster healthy relationships during a rather difficult time.

With her restaurant currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Fanjoy is turning to online resources to help others cope with isolation through her Fan/Joy Chef Life Skills Family Program.

This is an eight-week, hands-on and interactive online therapeutic one-hour family cooking class for up to 10 families with children aged seven to 12. Additional classes will be held for 12- to 17-year-olds.
